Let my people go so that they can worship me – Exodus 9:1
We take so much for granted thinking that we live in a free world. That we have the freedom to come and go as we please, choose what we will eat for lunch, who we will be in a relationship with and who our friends are … but there are people who don’t have those liberties and freedoms.
Living in a westernized country, one thinks how can this be but on digging a little deeper and going beneath the glossy surface of what we perceive to be our freedoms, we’ll find that not all things are as we perceive them to be.
What of those who have been sold unwillingly and non - consenting from the comforts and safety from those who we placed our trust in. Be it part of our culture and religious traditions or be it to enrich a family or be it to be done in the hopes of giving the one who is being sold, a better life …
What was once swept under the rug of our consciousness and our conscience , how we navigated our lives ignoring what was happening around us to individuals we knew or knew off or thinking “it doesn’t affect me” or “that only happens to members of the less affluent community” or “that only happens to people in third world countries” just won’t fly anymore. Not today and not ever again.
What if for most of our lives, the wool had been pulled over our eyes but recently, we have awoken to find that modern day slavery is more rife and thriving than we ever could have imagined? What if the people spoken of in the Bible who were held captive by the Pharaoh against their will and who were treated as slaves still exist in present day? What if the image of wealth , success and fame that is portrayed to us by the rich and famous is but an illusion? What if its all for show ? What if the picture and roleplay that we had been shown from a young age, the ones that made us wish for that same kind of success, fame and wealth was exactly that … a role play, a script, a movie … an illusion?
How would you feel if you found that some of those wealthy, successful and famous people are held captive in a modern day slave system. What if you found that some of those individuals did not have the liberty and freedom to speak their own minds, did not have the basic human right to choose whom to love and did not have the basic right to decide to call someone they wanted to speak to ….
It exists today … the enslavers and their enforcers dressed in disguise as your local café owner, neighbour, person of trust within your community etc.
What if some of those whose rights have been diminished , extracted or completely withheld, initially were made to believe that the trade off for the wealth, success and fame that they desired was much less than what they perceived it to be? What if some of them willingly gave up their rights initially not fully understanding the value and weight of what they were trading ? What if some of them just didn’t care and did it anyway?
What if God / The Creator / I Am / The Universe / The Collective Consciousness had assigned work for those individuals, important work, the stuff that could affect nations and worlds?
What if some of those people awoke from their illusion and pulled the wool from their eyes only to find that their very right to exist as a human had been stripped from them all the while they were been dazzled by the glare of fame and fortune?
What if we determined that there was a new definition of what poverty is and how it is dressed today?
What if those same people decided that they had a change of heart and insight and wanted to submit to God only to find that they were trapped in the trade off’s they had made. Their enslavers holding them in a tight grip, not allowing them to get out of their agreements.
How do you think God reacts to this situation given that everything happens in Divine timing, God’s time but what if now was God’s time? Would we see the same or similar events of God’s show of strength and force of will over His people like what is written in the Bible about the plagues God sent to warn Pharaoh and the eventual force of separating a sea to grant passage and freedom to those enslaved? What if we are the modern day Hebrews that God fights for?
Doesn’t it make you want to be sick, or at least think twice about a trade off for status and affluence.
